Triat Amsterdam opts for precision and a focus on triathletes

Triat kiest voor scherpte en focus op triatleten

Sometimes you have to grow first to realise where you truly belong. And sometimes progress means taking a step back. At least, that’s how it feels on paper. In practice, it’s exactly the opposite. With the arrival of ‘Triat’, Athlete Sports World isn’t opting for more, but rather for less noise and more direction. And that’s happening right here in Amsterdam, where the shop occupies a clear position within the triathlon community.

I spoke to Peter van Dartel about that transformation to Triat. On 10 April, the revamped shop will officially open under the name Triat in Amsterdam. No longer a ‘one-size-fits-all’ concept, but a sharp focus on triathletes and their specific needs. Not a cosmetic rebranding, but a clear change of direction. Exciting, because focus automatically means letting go of things.

Back to basics, but better

After two seasons of building, testing and growing, the realisation dawned that the concept simply wasn’t focused enough.

“After two seasons, we saw that we could do more for the triathlon community. The next step called for greater focus.”

That focus is on one thing: triathlon. No longer a broad endurance sports shop where you might also find something for triathlon, but a place entirely dedicated to this sport. From nutrition to gear, from advice to community.

The slogan really says it all. Back to our roots, but better than ever. Not nostalgia, but a conscious reset. Re-evaluating everything and keeping only what truly contributes.

A name that does what it’s supposed to do

The name Athlete Sports World sounded grand. Perhaps a little too grand. Triat does exactly the opposite. Short, clear and to the point.

“It had to be a stand-alone name that fits with what we do. Not too complicated, just clear.

And it works. Instead of a brand that tries to encompass everything, we now have a name that immediately sets the direction. No explanation needed. No context needed. Just clear.

More than just a shop

Triat doesn’t want to be a place where you just buy something and leave. It needs to be a place where you linger. Where you ask questions. Where you make mistakes and then don’t make them again.

“It’s about trust. About tips, tricks and the feeling that you’re being helped to achieve your goals.”

That also means there’s room for honesty. So sometimes you’ll be told that your choice isn’t the best one. Or that that particular size just isn’t right, however much you might want it to be.

And that’s exactly the difference compared to buying online. There, you gain speed. Here, you gain insight.

Why sizing isn’t a minor detail

According to Triat, things go wrong remarkably often in one area: sizing.

“The biggest mistake we see? People buy their gear too big. Especially wetsuits and cycling kit. That directly affects performance.”

It sounds like a minor detail, but it isn’t. A wetsuit that’s just a bit too loose, a cycling jersey that isn’t tight enough. Small discrepancies that add up until you realise you have to work harder for the same result.

That’s also where the power of physical contact lies. Trying things on, getting measured, receiving advice. Not spectacular, but essential.

Passionate about sport, serious about gear

“Mad about endurance, serious about gear.”

That phrase perhaps sums up the concept best. The love for the sport is there, but it only really matters when the basics are right.

Triat deliberately selects brands that add value. No overcrowded shelves, no choice overload for the sake of choice overload. Just products they genuinely believe in.

And perhaps even more importantly, they’re not afraid to say no. Not everything needs to be exclusive or hype-driven. It has to work for the athlete standing in front of you.

The excitement of starting afresh

A rebrand often sounds like a fresh start. In reality, it’s mainly exciting.

“The most exciting thing is how the target audience will react. Will people still find us?”

The honest answer is that nobody knows for sure. But the conviction that this concept is stronger seems to outweigh the doubt.

Because ultimately, it’s not about the name on the façade, but what happens inside.

Where Triat is heading

The ambition is clear. And yes, ambitious too.

Within two years, Triat aims to be a bigger name in the triathlon world than Athlete Sports World ever was. Not by making everything bigger, but by doing it better.

  • More knowledge.
  • More engagement.
  • More community.

A place where you don’t just buy gear, but also take steps forward.

Just pop in on 10 April

The doors open at 10:00 am on 10 April. New name, new energy, same drive but even sharper.

What does Peter hope people will feel?

“That they’re welcome. That this is the place for triathletes. And that all their questions will be answered here.”

And perhaps that’s the most important thing. You don’t have to prove anything to walk in. No fast times, no impressive results. Just an interest in the sport is enough.

Everyone is welcome at the official opening of Triat on 10 April. Whether you’re just starting out or have been competing for years, this is exactly the place where you’ll walk out a little wiser than when you walked in.

Practical questions and honest answers

  • Why is Athlete Sports World changing to Triat?
Because we needed a greater focus to really serve the triathlon community well.
  • What does ‘Back to our roots, but better than ever’ mean?
Back to the heart of triathlon, but with a stronger concept, more knowledge and better guidance.
  • What makes Triat different from other shops?
The combination of niche brands, personalised guidance and a strong focus on community.
  • Why is trying things on in person so important?
Because the wrong fit directly affects performance, especially with wetsuits and cycling clothing.
  • Who is Triat for?
For everyone: from beginners to experienced triathletes. No barriers, no exclusivity.
